Provincial proliferation in the land of Papua is part of the Government’s effort to achieve equitable development, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

The President also said that new autonomous provinces, namely Central Papua, Highland Papua, and South Papua, are expected to improve coverage of public services within the vast provinces.

“It’s aimed at achieving equitable development because Papua’s vast size is too large to be managed by two provinces,” he told reporters at Lukas Enembe Stadium, Jayapura regency, Papua province, Wednesday (08/31).

According to him, Papua’s provincial proliferation is a hope of the Papuans who have been expressed since several years ago.

“I listened to their voices; the Government listened to their voices. When I visited Merauke, they asked for it. When I was in Highland Papua, some community groups came to me and proposed it. It has been seven, six, or five years. We followed up [the aspiration] gradually,” he explained.

Regarding public opinion on the proliferation, he said that it is the practice of democracy.

“Once again, it’s the demand of the people. Pros and cons arising from it is a form of democracy,” he remarked. (DND/UN) (RAS/MUR)
